SPANISH WINE: PROPIEDAD DE ARINZANO REFINED AND ELEGANT WINES FROM GRANDES PAGOS

TASTING THE WINES OF PROPIEDAD DE ARANZANO

STORY AND PHOTO ESSAY BY DWIGHT CASIMERE

WINES FROM THE FIRST D.O. PAGOS IN THE NORTH OF SPAIN ARE BOTH COMPLEX AND REFINED

BARCELONA, Spain--Arizano estate is located in a valley formed by the slopes of the Pyrenees mountains in the North-East of Spain. Divided by the winding waters of the River Ega, the vineyards cover nearly 900 acres, consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and native- to -Spain, their national wine flagship,  Tempranillo.

The vines are cultivated in complex soils, consisting of limestone, chalky clay, alluvial soils and large stones. Workers are constantly pruning the vines in the field

 Hacienda De Arinzano Rose 2015-$18
Tasting notes: This is an elegant wine that defies normal perceptions of Rose'. It is silky and voluptuous with marvelous notes of white peach, tangerine and a bit of candied cherries and hints of ripe lemon to give it a bite. The wine has excellent structure and  nice acid. 100% Tempranillo, it shows off the true potential of this grape and the resultant care in producing it in superior terroir. The harvest was delayed to maximize ripeness and residual sugar. At 13.5% alcohol this is a true food wine, perfect for Mediterranean and Spanish-influenced dishes.

Tasting notes: Aged 14 months in French oak, the wine displays and almost India-ink deep purple/black color. The flavors are deep and intense as well; truffles, licorice an a hint of Maduro cigar and shaved cedar. There is an abundance of dark fruit on the nose and the palate; black plums, blackberries. There is a hint of sweetness, but it more like that found in preserved fruits. The wine is velvety in texture with a long, silky finish.
